Halloween...
The world seems to be going mad for Halloween this year, and if you are venturing out in the East End of London on Saturday, and find yourselves at Broadway Market, look up. The whole length of the street features small ghouls and ghosts lining the shops above the eye-line. The thing I guess I like is that someone has gone out of their way to decorate the street...they are all well done for a limited budget, always a good thing...

Moniker

New York collage and street artist Greg Lamarche, had a show at the recent Moniker street art exhibtion, round the corner in Old Street earlier this month. He’s worked on commercial projects for carharrtt, helio and zoo york to name but a few...

The new D’Espresso on Madison Avenue (at 42nd)in New York has certainly caught our attention. The reason for the attention is the fun design by the Manhattan-based nemaworkshop, a team of designers and architects that has created numerous cool retail and hospitality concepts. Founder Anurag Nema took the idea of a coffee shop that looks like a library – giving a nod to the nearby New York Public Library’s Bryant park branch – and turned it on its side.
The walls are not lined with books but the floors and ceiling are. Except that it is all an illusion, a life-size image of books printed on custom tiles. Pendant lighting does not hang from the ceiling; it sticks out from the walls. Not sure if you would feel a bit dizzy if you worked there daily but there you go....

This was created specifically for the BioPol laboratories in Skagastrand, Iceland. The space is located on the harbor and was abandoned for many years, formerly housing a fish processing plant and a textile factory. Shot by Katie Urban.

Freeze Etch

All things retro seem to always be a good starting point for any design task. That is taken to the extreme with the new album artwork by Eric Carl, for electronic musician Freeze Etch, utilizing vintage computer CD cases...makes it a shame to download it from itunes then doesn’t it.

Estonian sculptor Mati Karmin creates furniture and lighting from rusting naval “Blok” mines recovered from an ex-Soviet fortress on Naissaar Island, an Estonian island off the Finnish coast. More info available here if you were interested in finding out a bit more...
